Traditions represent legacy

Below is a short list of campus traditions. Some are seasonal, so approximate dates are provided.

Construction – It has become a way of life at UTD and has been nearly constant, whether major or minor, since the university was established in 1969. As you consider joining the Comet family, understand that the campus is still growing and developing. The result: a lot of construction. Luckily, the construction workers sport orange and green neon vests with campus pride as they help to build the future for UTD. Embrace this as a tradition and it will help you deal with detours and closures as construction continues on campus.

Welcome Week – The first full week of the fall semester includes several events which welcome all students to campus. Welcome Week focuses on introducing freshmen to other students, organizations and opportunities at the university. Be sure to take advantage of all the welcome week camaraderie, not to mention your fill of free pizza and other assorted foods throughout the week. If you pay for a meal during Welcome Week, you didn’t read the schedule right.

Temoc – The fuzzy blue ball of flame personified can be found regularly at student activities and all over campus during Welcome Week. Temoc, comet spelled backwards for those uninitiated, has a special place in every Comet’s heart. Give Temoc a big whoosh whenever you see him!

Cecil Green’s Head – Cecil Green is a titan in UTD history. He helped found Texas Instruments (TI) with his colleagues J. Erik Jonsson and Eugene McDermott. Their idea for an institution which trained students in this region to work for TI, as well as other budding companies and agencies, became what is now UTD. For his work in founding our campus, he has earned two buildings bearing his name: Green Hall and Green Center. Outside Green Hall you’ll find a bronze bust of Cecil Green. Rubbing Green’s head has become a tradition for many students on their way to exams or presentations throughout the semester. Many students find luck, courage or other excitement by rubbing the bronze follicles of Green’s bust. Whether you stop by or not is entirely up to you, but it could mean the difference between an “A” and an “A-”

Holiday Sing – One of the oldest tradition on campus, the annual Holiday Sing started in 1976. Hosted by the School of Arts and Humanities during the month of December, the event offers a free sing-a-long of holiday music for students, faculty and the community. The theme changes each year but promises to bring holiday spirit to all attendees.

Homecoming – No, the Comets don’t play Big XII football, but Comet soccer fans can hang with the best fans out there. During homecoming, alumni and the campus community come together to celebrate all things UTD. Scheduled during the middle of the Spring semester, the week is packed with activities including men’s and women’s soccer, decking out campus in orange and green, the tailgate party and pep rally, alumni ev
